Despite the development of many important concepts to predict crack initiation and its growth in materials, it is still a major challenge within the framework of classical continuum mechanics. The solutions within the realm of classical continuum mechanics result in infinite (singular) stresses at the crack tips, as derived in the pioneering study by Griffith (1921) that led to the concept of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM). Therefore, the onset of crack initiation and crack growth are treated separately by introducing external criteria, such as critical energy release rate, that are not part of the governing equations of classical continuum mechanics. However, its governing equations are derived based on the classical continuum mechanics, and it also suffers from the presence of undefined spatial derivatives of displacements at crack tips or along crack surfaces. The difficulties encountered in the methods utilizing the classical continuum mechanics can be overcome by performing Molecular Dynamics Simulations (MDS) or atomistic lattice models.
